Waves of Shutdowns Running High In Nepal

Issue 20, May 15, 2011

By KTM Metro Reporter

May 13, 2011: The Chhetri Samaj Nepal has shut down the business life of the Far Western Region of Nepal demanding timely promulgation of the new constitution, the Tharu Kalyankarini Sabha has shut down the Tharuhat region for putting pressure on the government to meet their 12-point demands, and Nepal Pariwar Dal held a motorcycle ride from Tinkune to Constituent Assembly Hall at Naya Baneswor and a rally there in Kathmandu for putting pressure on the government for completing the constitution writing on Thursday, May 12.

Today, the Nepal Federation of Indigenous Nationalities (NEFIN) has enforced the nationwide shutdown stopping the business of the people calling for an end to the political deadlock, for completing the writing of a new constitution and ensuring their rights in it.

One of the international donor agencies has threatened to cut off the assistance provided to the NEFIN, as it has been indulged in shutting down the nation violating the basic human rights of the people to work and live peacefully.

Time has come for the Nepalis to rise against the callers of shutting down the regular vehicular traffic and businesses of other people denying people to work peacefully for their livelihood. Shutting down the regular traffic and closing down the businesses of other people are the criminal acts. However, one government after another had been so impotent to take actions against the cadres that had burned vehicles during the call of the traffic shutdown not to mention taking actions against the callers of the shutdown. So, Nepalis need to rise against the callers of shutdowns and defy any such calls and take actions against such callers in the future.
