Declaration of Two More Autonomous States

Issue 51, December 20, 2009

By KTM Metro Reporter in Kathmandu

On December 13, 2009, following the third round movement against the unconstitutional move of the President on directly writing a letter to the army chief, the UCPN-Maoist has declared two more autonomous states in Western Nepal. One is called Seti-Mahakali and another is Tharuvan.

Most of the leaders of other political parties have opposed the declaration of autonomous states by the Maoists; they say that the declaration of autonomous states goes against the Interim Constitution and the Comprehensive Peace agreement. However, Maoists have been saying that the declaration of autonomous states is for putting pressure on other leaders for restructuring states, and in accordance with the Interim Constitution.

Seti-Mahakali comprises seven districts such as Bajhang, Bajura, Accham, Doti, Dadeldhura, Darchula, and Baitadi. Tharuvan comprises five districts such as Banke, Bardiya, Dang, Kailali, and Kanchanpur.
