Issue 29, July 15, 2012

By KTM Metro Reporter

July 14, 2012: speaking at a symposium held by the Human Rights Defense International (HRDI) at Indian Law Institute in New Delhi today, Bhutanese Refugee Representative Repatriation Committee chairman Bhampa Rai said that India has a moral responsibility to help secure justice for the 130,000 refugees forced out of Bhutan to shift to Nepal in the 1990s, according to IANS. Representatives of Bhutanese refugees from Nepal and HRDI urged India to help the refugees forced out of Bhutan. Indian parliamentarian Tarun Vijay of the Bharatiya Janata Party said that the refugees were "facing silent terrorism at the hands of the monarchy through oppressive laws and systematic discrimination".
