By KTM Metro Reporter
November 25, 2011: with the assistance of the European Union, the network of the defenders of the human rights of women has been marking the 21st anniversary of the violence against women in Nepal starting on November 25, 2011 and ending on December 10, 2011 for 16 days, ‘gorkhapatra’ of today writes.
Marking this day of the violence against women has been set after the dictatorial government of the Dominican Republic in 1960 had mercilessly killed three sisters that had been fighting for democracy in that country.
On this occasion, Prime Minister Dr. Baburam Bhattarai and Minister for Women Affairs have delivered their radio messages through the state-run Radio Nepal just before in its 7 o’clock morning news release today.
Activists engaged in reducing the violence against women have said that Nepal has done a lot in reducing the violence against women but many more need to be done. Many women still suffer from the domestic violence in Nepal. Women trafficking continue.
Speaking to the ‘antar sambad’ program of the Radio Nepal today, Secretary to the Ministry of Women Affairs has said that his ministry has submitted a bill on violence against women labeling them as witches, and has been waiting for the House passing it. The violence against women charging them as witches has continued but the local administration and the police have been unable to tackle such crime due to the absence of a law on this matter.
