Newly Elected Prime Minister Prachanda sworn in

Issue 34, August 24, 2008

By KTM Metro reporter in Kathmandu

On August 18, 2008, newly elected Prime Minister Prachanda was sworn in at the function held on the premises of the Rastrapati Bhavan in Kathmandu. He took the oath of office and secrecy administered by the President. He did not swear in the name of the God but of the people. The form of oath has the option of either swearing in the name of God or of the people. So, it was not a big deal.

After receiving the congratulations from the members of the international community in Kathmandu and other political leaders and his party members, he drove to the Prime Minister’s office at Singh Durbar where the office staffs greeted him with the bouquets of flowers.

Breaking the tradition of wearing the State uniform set by the previous rulers, Prime Minister Prachanda was in the western suit and tie; however, he did not forget to wear a special black cap called ‘Bhadgaule Topi.’

Outgoing Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala did not attend the swearing-in ceremony.
