SPA Holds A Mass Rally under tight security in Janakpur

Issue 05, February 03, 2008

BY KTM Metro Reporter in Kathmandu

Following the 23-point agreement the leaders of the seven-party alliance (SPA) signed on December 23, 2007, they have already held four joint mass meetings out of seven to be held in different towns as an election campaign to the election for a Constituent Assembly. Each party took a turn to manage a mass meeting. They have already held mass meetings in three Terai towns such as Biratnagar, Bhairahawa and Dhanagadi, and one in Kathmandu.

On January 26, 2008, they held a mass meeting under the heavy security in another Terai town Janakpur, as some of the Terai rebellious groups attempted to foil the mass meeting. To some extent they were successful, as the organizers could not bring the number of people they anticipated coming to the mass meeting.

The Terai groups called the local people for boycotting the meeting, attempt to disrupt the traffic, and held their rallies to prevent the seven-party alliance from holding the mass meeting. The security forces clashed with the dissident groups and injured more than 60 people in the clash. So, the turnout of the people was not more than ten thousands against the expectation of 200,000 people. The mass meeting scheduled for the noon was held only at 3:00 P.M. that also for one hour. Every speaker spoke only for about five minutes.

The Terai groups charged the seven-party alliance for holding the election for a constituent assembly without meeting their demands for proportional representation based on the population. So, they want to disrupt the election.
