Confrontation Between Landless People And Police

Issue 49, December 6, 2009

BY KTM Metro Reporter in Kathmandu

On December 4, 2009, one policeman and three landless people died when the landless people confronted the police attempting to forcibly eject them from the fallow land they have been dwelling on in the Kailali district. The police burned down the sheds the landless people have been living in; so, they fought back the policemen equipped with the most modern weapons.

The Nepalese media have been reporting that ‘All Nepal Landless People’s Association’ affiliated to the Maoists has lured the people to move to the fallow land telling them the Maoists have been distributing the land to the landless people. So, a large number of people from the hills move down to the area.

However, the landless people on camera told the TV reporters that the Indian encroachment on the land they have been living in the Nepalese territory on the border between Nepal and India has forced them to come to live on the fallow land; if the Nepalese police use the force to remove the Indians encroaching on their land then they would go back to their original land and live there; the Nepalese police have been using the force to remove the Nepalis living on the fallow land but have not done anything to remove the Indians from the Nepalese territory.

Protesting against the police using the power to forcibly remove the people living on the fallow land, the landless people have called for indefinite shutdown of the Kailali district, and have damaged six government vehicles running on the streets according to the State-run Radio Nepal 7:00 AM morning news aired on December 5, 2009.
