Freed Haliyas Returned To Be Bonded Again

December 22, 2013: Some six years since the Haliyas were emancipated from the bonded labor the government freeing them from the hereditary debts in the Far and Mid-Western regions, some of the freed Haliyas returned to be bonded laborer again, according to the RSS news on ‘gorkhapatraonline.com’.
The government of Nepal had declared the end of the inhumane treatment of keeping bonded laborers called Haliyas in 2007 freeing 19,059 Haliyas in the Far-Western and Mid-Western regions from the hereditary debts.
The destiny of some of the freed Haliyas could not improve. They have neither lands nor a shelter to live in. Consequently, they have to go back to work on the land of landlords to survive, and be Haliyas again.
Although the Haliyas were freed from the hereditary debts they have no means of livelihood. Either they have to cross the border with India for jobs or to go back to the landlords for jobs.
