Second Round Of Madheshi And Ethnic Movement In Nepal

KTM Reporter

Kathmandu: May 16, 2016 is the second day of the second round of the Madheshi and Ethnic Movement. This time the movement is centered at Sighadurbar means the Secretariat of the government of Nepal in Kathmandu for putting pressure on the government to consider their demand for amending the constitution.

Their first round of movement primarily ended in blocking the border entry points in the south causing the economic devastation to Nepal that has been just destroyed by the merciless quakes. So, the movement ended in fiasco. Nepalese in general did not support the movement because IPM Modi had been behind it.

Modi had been even successful to convince the EU and British establishments of the Nepalese constitution has been not inclusive, thus he had been campaigning against the Nepalese constitution in the international arena. Modi might have been actively supporting the current ethnic and Madheshi movement indicating his total failure in the foreign policy.

The current movement has been centered at the Secretariat. It has been less painful than blocking the border entry points causing tremendous shortage of foods, medicines, and petroleum products in the past. However, the movement has caused traffic disruption again causing the troubles to the innocent daily commuters.

Thousands of multi-colored flags, large banners, and thousands of headbands wearing protestors are seen marching on the streets. Maybe, hundreds of buses have ferried the protestors from different parts of the country.

The question is from where the leaders of the movement organizers have mobilized such a large sum of money to spend so lavishly on decorating the protestors and carrying so many flags. Probably, it involved millions of rupees.

Deputy Prime Minister Bijya Gacchedar said that the movement has the involvement of foreigners. Maoist leader Dev Gurung clearly stated that New Delhi (Indian government) and Lainchaur (Indian embassy in Kathmandu) were behind the movement.

UCPN-Maoist leader Gopal Kirati has openly joined the movement defying the party stand on not participating in the movement even though the party is empathetic to the demands of the protestors. Chairman of UCPN-Maoist Prachanda said that anybody taking part in the movement against the decision of the party would be subject to the party actions.

Dr Baburam Bhattarai of the coordinator of the new force has openly supported the movement. He has earned the open backing of the Indian establishment.

President of NC Sher Bahadur Deuba said that the government had shown its one-sided actions on running the administration keeping his party out of the State business. He hinted at the democracy being at stake.

Deuba has changed his tone from cooperating with the government on enforcing the constitution to challenging the government doing anything without his presence in the State business.

Poor Deuba could not do much even with the backing of the Indian establishment. He also could not join the Madheshi movement for forcing the Oli government out of office.

Deuba attempted to overthrow the Oli government in a quick political coup but failed. The causality of this attempted coup has been the Nepalese ambassador to India Deep Kumar Upadhaya: one of the NC activists.

The Oli government recalled ambassador Upadhaya suspecting his involvement in the conspiracy of toppling the Oli government while Deuba was in New Delhi ostensibly for treating his spouse but obviously for plotting the overthrow of the Oli government, according to the statement of one of the deputy ministers of Prime Minister Oli.
