Nepal Requests UN for Extension Of Term Of UNMIN

Issue 37, September 12, 2010

By KTM Metro Reporter

September 08, 2010: without consulting the leaders of the UCPN-Maoist, on September 07, 2010, Officiating Prime Minister Madhav Nepal sent a letter to the UN Security Council requesting for extension of the term of UNMIN for four months not explicitly mentioning the reduction of the mandate of the UNMIN but in the language as vague as possible to interpret it in any way anybody likes to interpret it. This is the typical trait of Madhav Nepal. He has successfully tricked everybody in the Nepalese political arena vaguely mentioning in the agreements in the past. However, Mr. Madhav Nepal will not be able to trick the UN officials to fall in the trap of his tricks and traps policy.

The government has sent a letter to the UN Security Council for extending the term of the UNMIN with the mandate to the monitoring of management of Maoist combatants and their arms. It states that Nepal Army being the national army has been working under democratic control, and there are specific constitutional and legal provisions for control, mobilization and management of the Nepal Army.

However, Mr. Madhav Nepal neither did dare to request the UN Security Council for a change in UNMIN's mandate to take Nepal Army off its monitoring nor did mention UNMIN to continue with the current mandate. Certainly, this letter has been unclear to create confusion.

Leaders of the NC and CPN-UML have been lobbying for pushing the UNMIN out of the country for going head-on collision with the Maoists disregarding the Nepalese people’s aspirations for a lasting peace and prosperity. They don’t mind shedding the blood of sons and daughters of common Nepalis to serve their interest.

As the government has failed in consulting the UCPN-Maoist, the Maoists have said that they are going to write a separate letter to the UN Security Council requesting for the extension of the term of UNMIN. The Maoists have been for extending the term of the UNMIN with the mandate previously agreed on until the completion of the peace process that will be completed simultaneously with the writing of the constitution of Nepal following the Comprehensive Peace Agreement they have signed with the Government of Nepal.
