Deal On West Seti Hydro Electricity Project Continues To Draw Controversy

Issue 12, March 18, 2012

By KTM Metro Reporter

March 12, 2012: Speaking at an interaction event held in Kathmandu on Sunday, Minister for Energy Posta Bahadur Bogati has said that Nepal fails attracting large-scale foreign investments if the deal recently reached between the Government of Nepal and the China Three Gorges Corporation (CTGC) on the 750-MW West Seti Hydropower Project is revoked, ‘The Rising Nepal’ of today writes. Minister Bogati has said that the foreign investments in Nepal would dry up if the deal on the West Seti Hydropower Project were blocked.

The Minister also has said that the deal has been done following the Article 35 of the Electricity Act 2049. The Minister has challenged those people particularly the lawmakers belonging to the NC trying to block this project stating he is ready to face the actions if these guys could find any irregularities in the deal on the hydro project the government has reached with the Chinese company.

At the same time, former Minister for Energy Dr. Prakash Sharan Mahat has called for revoking the deal on the West Seti Hydropower Project stating the government needs to call a bid for such a deal. Clearly, this NC guy has not noticed what the incumbent Minister has said that the Government has followed the rule. Dr. Mahat was the man that installed invertors at his home at the cost of the Nepal Electricity Authority when he was a minister for energy to illuminate his home when millions of Nepalis lived in darkness, and then he stopped importing invertors most probably for serving his interest.

The government must build any hydropower projects in the public or the private sector without any delay at any cost to mitigate billions of rupees worth of the business loss Nepalis has been paying for the perpetual shortage of power caused by the 20-year NC rule, and even now some of the NC lawmakers are trying to kill the deal on the new hydropower project. These NC guys want to keep the Nepalis perpetually in darkness and poverty causing the short supply of power and denying the business to the people.

Joint Secretary to the Ministry of Energy Arjun Kumar Karki and Vice-chairman of the Chinese company Wang Sabefeng have signed the deal on the 750-MW West Seti Hydropower Project in presence of Minister for Energy Post Bahadur Bogati and Chinese Ambassador Yang Houlan on February 29, 2012.
