Provincial And Federal Elections

KTM Metro Reporter

August 18, 2017

Kathmandu: at the meeting held at Baluwatar official residence of prime minister yesterday evening, leaders of three major political parties such as NC, CPN-UML, Maoist-Center, the Chief Election commissioner and other election commissioners agreed in principle to hold the provincial and federal elections simultaneously in two phases.

Election commissioners have proposed to hold provincial and federal elections in the 31 districts of the high Himalayan areas on November 20, 2017 before the heavy snowfalls in those areas, and in other 44 districts on December 7, 2017, the news in “gorkhapatra” of today stated.

In order to have sufficient time for the Election Commission to hold the elections, election commissioners have urged the government to announce the dates of elections and get the Bills on elections passed from the parliament before the end of August.

However, Chief Election Commission said that it would be hard to hold the provincial and federal elections simultaneously as two ballot papers: one for the direct election and another for proportional election for the provincial and another two for the federal elections have to be used, which would be hard to do.

The deadline the Constitution of 2015 has set for holding these provincial and federal elections is January 21, 2018.
