Hamid Karzai Sworn In President of Afghanistan

Issue 47, November 22, 2009

By KTM Metro Reporter in Kathmandu

On November 19, 2009, Hamid Karzai took the oath of office of President for a second term in Afghanistan. US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, President of Pakistan Zardari are the dignitaries attending the sworn-in ceremony in the Afghan capital Kabul.

President Karzai’s election for the second term has been mired by fraud. He could have won the election in the first round of the elections if fresh ballot papers were not stuffed and overwhelming votes were not counted in the remote areas where even the elections were not held. So, he has to accept the second round of elections for the President. However, the opposition candidate willingly pulled out of the elections giving Karzai the much-needed victory.

President Karzai has faced the pressure of the international community to do away with the rampant corrupt among the ministers and the state employees. Even his two deputies are accused of involving in corruption and drug trafficking. Almost all his supporters are involved in one corruption or another. So, some political analysts say that President Karzai is sandwiched between the pressure from the international community to control the corruption and from his supporters not to touch their businesses.
