Marking Harisayani Ekadasi By Planting Tulsi Plants In Nepal

Issue 29, July 21, 2013

By KTM Metro Reporter

July 20, 2013: Nepalis have planted ‘tulsi’ plant in their flowerpots or in a special high ground made for it yesterday: the eleventh day of the Asadha-sukla means the eleventh day of the lunar light fortnight of the Asadha month. This day is called ‘Harisayani Ekadasi’ means Lord Vishnu is going to have a long sleep for four months. So, Nepalis plant and nurture a ‘tulsi’ plant believing Lord Vishnu has left his soul in the plant for the four months. Everyday, one of the household members particularly a man or a woman that has planted a ‘tulsi’ plant offers it holy water every morning.

A legend has it that Lord Vishnu has gone to serve Monarch Bali Raja in his world for four months. Lord Vishnu has given Bali Raja an opportunity of meeting his wish after crushing him down to the unknown world for his meritorious deeds that have shook the throne of the heavenly King Indra. Lord Vishnu had to do so for saving Indra from getting replaced by Bali Rja.

After sending Bali Raja to the unknown world, Lord Vishnu said to Bali Raja, “Have a wish, I will meet it”. Bali Raja said, “Be my guard, as I am in the unknown world.” Lord Vishnu said, “Not for all the time but for four months I will be with you.” Thus, Lord Vishnu goes every year to serve Bali Raja as a guard for four months every year.
