Police rough handled women protesting in partially nude

Issue 32, August 10, 2008

BY KTM Metro reporter in Kathmandu

On Sunday, August 03, 2008, the Nepalese male and female police rough handled the women attempting to hold a protest rally in a partially nude fashion. According to woman activist Dr. Renu Rajbhandari, three different groups of women dressed in three different style: women dressed in black petticoat covering the whole body except for the shoulder and above, women dressed in black and then women dressed in regular clothes were preparing to take a protest rally at Maitighar Mandala, Kathmandu when the police raided them. She said that the women were not in nude in any sense at all but they called it a partially nude to symbolize the government has been semi-naked not ending the violence against women, and not setting up a high level commission on this issue. The police arrested about 50 women injuring some of them in the scuffle.

The women’s rights activists have been putting pressure on the government for taking actions against the killers of the women’s rights activist Laxmi Bohara of Kanchanpur. They believe that her in-laws killed her on May 6, 2008. They claimed that the leaders of the major parties such as CPN-Maoist, Nepali Congress and Madheshi People’s Rights Forum promised to support them for this purpose.

Women’s rights activists have been on a relay-hunger strike at the Maitighar Mandala since 22 days ago demanding actions against the murder of Laxmi Bohara. She was a human rights activist in Kanchanpur district. She had been working as a female health volunteer at her home district.

The women’s activists said that they have to resort to taking the issue to the streets, as the government has not paid any attention to their burning issues.

In a statement, National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) expressed concern over the use of excessive forces against the women’s Rights activists that have been peacefully holding a protest rally at Maitighar Mandala on August 03, 2008. NHRC called on the government to settle the issues of women through dialogue. NHRC has been monitoring the women’s protest rallies and the activities of the security; it has noted that the security has violated human rights a number of times while dealing with the women activists.
