UNMIN Chief Landgren Meets DPM And Maoist leader

Issue 01, Janaury 3, 2010

By KTM Metro Reporter in Kathmandu

On December 31, 2009, before flying to New York for a regular briefing about the peace process in Nepal to the UN Security Council meeting to be held in the second week of January 2010, UNMIN Chief Karin Landgren has met with Acting Prime Minister Bijya Gacchedar and one of the Deputy Chairmen of UCPN-Maoist Dr. Baburam Bhattarai.

The government has not been very happy with the performances of the UNMIN, as the Prime Minister believes that the UNMIN has been tilting toward the Maoists. The UNMIN has been repeatedly saying that it has been performing its duty following the mandate given by the Government of Nepal and the UN.

During the meeting with Karin Landgren, Dr. Bhattarai has appreciated the role of the UNMIN in the peace process, and asked for the extension of the UNMIN tenure in Nepal for the next six months. The government has recently decided to request for the extension of the tenure of UNMIN for four months.
