Making A Government

Issue 25, June 21, 2009

By KTM Metro Reporter in Kathmandu

Prime Minister Madhav Nepal has been unable to give a shape to his cabinet even after almost four weeks of his sworn-in as the second Prime Minister of Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal. Will he be able to manage the new government satisfying the appetite of all political leaders of the twenty-two political parties for juicy ministerial portfolios supporting him ignoring the democratic norms and values? These political parties have gone to the ceremonial President to overstep the Interim Constitution of Nepal of 2007, and override the decision made by the democratically elected government and let the twice-defeated person steal the power from the elected government bringing the most unwanted current situation of political deadlock.

It has been clear that these twenty-two political parties have engaged in power grabbing politics rather than working for peace and prosperity of Nepalis. That is the main reason why they have not been able to give a concrete shape to a new government.

The United  Democratic Madheshi Front (UDMF) has shown its real picture. It has rose to the fourth position in the hierarchy of the political parties winning the seats in the Constituent Assembly-cum-legislature with the slogan of ‘One Madhesh One Province’ for the Madheshis, for which many brave Madheshi young people have sacrificed their lives. Now, UDMF has sold it to the NC and the CPN-UML coalition for a few spicy ministerial portfolios.

The twenty-two political parties have no mind for the welfare of Nepalis. They have been only after the ministerial positions. Smaller parties that will soon disappear from the Nepalese political arena have been glad to receive at least a ministerial position. Some of them have been surviving because of the seats they have received from the proportional representation system.

We have seen how the so-called democrat Girija Prasad Koirala has done the most undemocratic thing appointing his daughter to the leader of the NC members joining the government bypassing senior and most dedicated leaders. This has been the most undemocratic move of the so-called democratic leader.

Madhav Nepal has been a clown in the political circus juggling the ministerial portfolios. He has been attempting to satisfy so many political parties. At the end of the day, he may be able to ignore some of the small parties but he is not in a position to ignore UDMF that has a card to play in making and breaking a new government. So, Madhav Nepal needs to dance to the tune of the UDMF otherwise he is sure to lose the power he has stolen from the elected government.
