Doubled Number Of Parties Contesting In Elections

Issue 42, October 20, 2013

By KTM Metro Reporter

October 18, 2013: Number of the political parties participating in the elections scheduled for November 19 has doubled in comparison to the number of political parties participated in the elections held in 2008, according to the Election Commission news released yesterday, Xinhua news says.

Out of 119 political parties registered at the EC in 2008, 54 political parties had taken part in the elections, and 25 of them were represented in the dissolved CA. Later, the number of parties reached 33 in the CA after some parties split into new ones.

Currently, out of 139 political parties registered at the EC, 122 parties have their candidates registered at the EC for the proportional representation in a new CA.

Of the 122 political parties registered at the EC, only four political parties such as UCPN-Maoist, NC, CPN-UML and Samyukta Loktantrik Madhesi Morcha (SLMM) have registered their candidates for more than 95 percent of CA seats. These political parties secured first, second, third and fourth position respectively in the CA after the elections held in 2008.

Some observers say that an increase in number of parties will only aggravate the already unstable political situation in the country.
