On Monday, January 26, 2009, Prime Minister Prachanda invited secretaries to all ministries to his official residence and instructed them to sincerely enforce the programs mentioned in his address to the nation delivered on Sunday, January 25, 2009, also told them not to work with the mindset of this government was falling down soon, as this government would remain intact for its full life; the government would take strict actions against the secretaries that would not work properly; also told that the government was not for making transfer of secretaries.
On January 26, 2009, former General Secretary of the CPN-UML but rejected by voters Madhav Kumar Nepal and Finance Minister Dr. Baburam Bhattarai had a cockfight on the premises of the Indian Embassy in Kathmandu while attending the celebration of the Republic Day of India. Both of them were speaking to reporters and answering the questions of reporters and verbally attacking each other. A few days ago, Mr. Nepal had said that the members of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) were criminals and they should be in jail; in turn, Dr. Bhattarai had said that Mr. Nepal was out of mental balance when he said so, as the PLA had been instrumental in removing the monarchy and making Nepal a democratic republic. Indian Ambassador Rakesh Sood prevented them from further fighting with each other and damaging their relationship.
Pashupati Area Development Trust has been preparing for making the vacancy announcement and calling on the eligible candidates for applying for the positions of ‘bhatta’ (priests) for holding regular worship at the Pashupati in the near future.
On January 27, 2009, the state-run Radio Nepal reported that the Indian contractor has completed the cofferdam on the Koshi River and has diverted the Koshi River to its original course; the Nepalese Department of Roads said that it would complete the building of the damaged portion of the East-West Highway within a week and run the traffic smoothly on this highway.
On January 27, 2009, Nepalese ethnic Tamangs and Sherpas celebrated the Sonam Lo-sar as the New Year. The President, Vice-president and Prime Minister sent their best wishes to them. Similarly, ethnic Gurungs had celebrated Tamu Lo-sar on December 30, 2008.
The opposition political parties and some political parties in the government gave their mixed comments on the Prime Minister’s national address delivered on January 25, 2009. Leader of the Nepali Congress party Sushil Koirala said that the national address of the Prime Minister was for rescuing the government from fall. However, the spokesman for the United Maoists’ party said that Prime Minister’ national address was an administrative programs not a political manifesto.
One person died and four others have lost eyesight drinking the phony alcohol sold under the brand name of ‘Khukuri’ rum in Kathmandu, the local newspaper reported on January 27, 2009.
