NC President Koirala For Extension Of Term Of OHCHR

Issue 50, December 11, 2011

By KTM Metro Reporter

December 8, 2011: at the meeting with the envoys of European Union (EU) at his residence in Maharajgunj, Kathmandu, NC president Sushil Koirala has said that the top leaders of three major parties have decided to extend the term of the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights in Nepal for a year for the last time, ‘The Himalayan Times’ online writes today.

The envoys have urged President Koirala to extend the term of the OHCHR at least for the period of the transition to institutionalizing federalism and democracy in Nepal. National Human Rights Commission and other human rights organizations have been pressing the government for extending the term of OHCHR.

The coalition government of UCPN-Maoist and UDMF has not been in favor of extending the term of OHCHR, as the government wants to declare a parole to all the perpetrators of human rights, no matter whether they are state personnel or the Maoists.
