By KTM Metro Reporter

June 22, 2013: The Federal Republic of Germany and Nepal have signed off an agreement on the Federal Republic of Germany providing Nepal with a grant assistance of Rs. 1.75 billion (Euro 14 million) for the 'Promotion of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energies Program' at the Ministry of Finance in Kathmandu yesterday, according to the news on ‘gorkhapatraonline.com’.

Traditional yak farming in Dolakha and its neighboring districts has been declining and about to disappear due to the shrinking grazing lands. Yak farming has been adversely affected by the lack of developing genetically improved breeds of the animal. After the emergence of the community forest and the establishment of Gaurishankar Conservation Area, yak farmers have been facing acute shortage of pasturelands to graze their yaks, according to the news on ‘gorkhapatraonline.com’.

The Gaurishankar Conservation Area has adversely affected the farmers of Dolakha, Sindhupalchok and Ramechhap districts as they have restricted yak grazing in the conservation area. Farmers have said that grass growth in the higher hills has been gradually decreasing in recent years due to long draught and failure to introduce improved grass species.

Around 100 households of Sailung, Kalinchok, Aalmpu Syama, Suri,, Mali, Marbu, Bigu, Lamabagar and Gaurishankar Village Development Area of the Dolakha district have been engaged in the yak farming.

The District Technical Office (DTO) of the Jajarkot district has charged the consultancy fee of Rs. 100,000 for surveying the road project of Rs. 200,000. A local Users Committee protested against the DTO taking so much money for the survey of two-kilometer road linking Ultesal of Khalanga-2 to Jhyalikhet of Khalanga-6, according to the RSS news posted on ‘gorkhapatraonline.com’.

However, Chief Engineer of the DTO Om Prasad Saha said that he did not know the survey of the road was carried out before and the survey fee was taken, as the project was part of a Rs. 2.5 million ongoing project.

Speaking at an interaction on “Scholarships for Dalits and the Situation of Implementation” by National Dalit Commission (NDC) in Lalitpur yesterday, Chairwoman of NDC Sushila Sirpali said that though the provision for providing dalits with scholarships has been made, very few dalits have been receiving such scholarships due to the ineffective implementation of the legal provision. She demanded that the government should form a high level mechanism to monitor the distribution of such scholarships, according to the news on ‘gorkhapatraonline.com.’
