District Police And Administration Protecting Brothels In India

Issue 36, September 2, 2012

By KTM Metro Reporter

August 31, 2012: The Asian Human Rights Commission (AHRC) has reported that it has received a report from Guria: a human rights organization based in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh working against human trafficking stating the Meerut district administration, and the district police officers have prevented the rescue of many children stuck in brothels. Even officers working for the District Child Welfare Committee (CWC) failed to cooperate with the rescue. The Circle Officer – a police officer within the Uttar Pradesh state police, equivalent to the rank of Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), or Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) – heading an independent police sub-division, and stationed at Brahmapuri during the rescue, went so far as to slap the rescued girls and abuse the staff members of Guria for 'causing trouble.’ The case illustrates how closely police officers and elements in the district administration of the state connive with sex syndicates and facilitate human trafficking in India.
