Priests At Pashupati In Kathmandu

Issue 34, August 23, 2009

By KTM Metro Reporter in Kathmandu

Nepalese priest have rolled up sleeves to fight against the government’s intention for appointing the Indian priests to the temples to Lord Pashupati in Kathmandu. In December 2008, the Maoist-led government has appointed Nepalese priests to the positions vacated by the Indian priests. The leaders of the pro-Indian Nepalese political parties particularly the Nepali Congress have opposed the appointment of Nepalese priests causing disappointment to Nepalis with nationalistic feelings.

The current government particularly the India-sponsored Prime Minister Madhav Nepal has sent somebody to recruit Indian priests to work at the world holiest Hindu shrine Pashupati in Kathmandu. It will be a shame if the current government appoints Indian priests to the Nepalese shrine so holy to all Hindus. Al Nepalis with nationalistic feelings will rise up against such government’s intervention in appointing Indian priests at the Nepalese temple.

About 400 years ago the then ruler called Pratap Malla appointed south Indian priests at the temple to Pashupati in Kathmandu to avoid a possible controversy arising from replacing one group of Nepalese priests with another group of priests.

Pashupati set up in the 3rd century BC is one of the holiest shrines of Hindus. Every year, Hindus from all over the world flock to this shrine in February on the birthday of Lord Shiva called Shiva-ratri.
