Action Plan On Acting Against Gender Violence Year 2010
By KTM Metro Reporter in Kathmandu
On November 25, 2009, addressing the function of announcing ‘Action Plan On Acting Against Gender Violence Year 2010’, Prime Minister Madhav Nepal has said that violence against women has been increasing at an alarmingly rate every day, he has instructed his office to investigate the issues concerning the gender violence, and has directed the Ministry of women to set up ‘Help Center’ at each village to give women access to justice according to the State-run newspaper ‘The Rising Nepal’ of November 26, 2009.
Prime Minister’s statements do not follow his deeds, as he has failed in directing his Home Minister to take actions against the policemen that have raped their woman colleague. The women activists have set up ‘United Struggle Committee’ fighting for justice to the policewoman: the victim of the gang rape by her colleagues, and held a pubic attention meeting on November 25, 2009.
The simplest things the government could do has not been done so far. For example, the government could easily stop the trafficking of Nepalese women to the Indian brothels, and the torture of women accusing them of being witches. The police often do not register the cases of such violence against women from the victims not to mention taking legal actions against the offenders because the government of Madhav Nepal only talks but not take actions, in addition does not enforce the laws, rules and regulations protecting women from violence.
British government has provided UNICEF with Rs 800 million (6.5 million pounds) through the Department For International Development (DFID) for running Paralegal Committees (PCLs) at all 75 districts for advocating against violence against women, children, and socially excluded people in Nepal starting in 2010 and lasting through 2012.
