High Prices of Commodities in Nepal

Issue 27, July 5, 2009

BY KTM metro Reporter in Nepal

June 29, 2009, Nepalis have been facing the high prices of goods of daily use despite the low prices in the neighboring country.  Normally, the prices of goods in Nepal rise and fall depending on the prices at the supply sources practically the neighboring market. However, this time, prices of goods have remained high despite the prices in the neighboring market have gone down.

Nepalese economists have attributed the high prices of goods in the Nepalese market to: the almost daily shutdown of traffic at one part of the country or another, the cartel of transporters charging almost twice the cost for the transport of goods, strikes at the factories causing low production, and prohibition of import of certain commodities such eggs and chicken for fear of bird flu.
