By KTM Metro Reporter

February 27, 2012: a bomb went off at the main office of Nepal Oil corporation (NOC) at Babarmahal in Kathmandu killing two instantly, another at the hospital and injuring a number of people at mid day today. A little known ethic group called United Ethnic Liberation Front (Samyukta Jatiya Mukti Morcha-Bishwokranti) claimed for the misdeed. Deputy Prime Minister Bijaya Gacchedar holding the portfolio of Home Affairs has said a little-known United Ethnic Liberation Front has claimed for this misdeed.

A person claimed to be the spokesman for the front on the telephone call to the Sagarmatha Television said that the front has set off a bomb in protest against the recent price rise in the petroleum products. The government headed by Prime Minister Dr. Baburam Bhattarai has increased the prices of petroleum products second time when the call for the rollback of the price rise from the first has not faded, yet.

The Babarmahal area is the hub of a number of government offices. The district administration office is nearby, and a number of offices of government departments and ministries, they’re including the office of a law court are there, too. So, the area must be well protected.

NOC has the monopoly on importing and distributing petroleum products in Nepal. Short supply of these petroleum products has been acute in Nepal for the last five years. People have to stand in line for hours to fill a car and live without cooking gas or buy in the black market. Often the long line of vehicles lining up for filling their tanks disrupt the traffic causing traffic jam. Not only the people lining up for gasoline and diesel lost the precious time but also the regular commuters on the roads. Nobody knows how many of the people stranded on the traffic jam lost their important business.

The Home Ministry has set up a police-investigating team comprising Senior Superintendent Devendra Sudedi, Senior Superintendent Kedar Man Singh Bhandari and Superintendent Subodh Ghimire headed by DIG Upendra Kanta Aryal to hold investigation into the blast that killed three persons and injured several people today according to the news posted on the nepalnews.com

Talking to the reporters, Deputy Prime Minister Bijaya Gacchedar holding the portfolio of Home Affairs has condemned the blast that killed three persons as the cowardly act, and assured the families of the victims of proper compensation for the loss of their loved ones and of free medical treatment to the injured, and vowed to bring the perpetrators of the crime to justice.

Leaders of thirteen student unions affiliated to various political parties including the UCPN-Maoist have served a notice of 24-hour ultimatum to the government of rolling back the price rise of petroleum products otherwise face a nationwide protest, nepalnews.com reports.

The government has increased the retail price of petrol, diesel and aviation fuel to Rs 116, Rs 85 and Rs 109 respectively. The government has reserved the rights to import, distribute and set the prices of the petroleum products.
