Referendum on Monarchy, Republic, and Proportional Representation

Issue 41, October 14, 2007

By KTM Metro Reporter

On Sunday, October 07, 2007, talking to the reporters at Dhangadhi Airport, Far Western Nepal, Chairman of CPN-Maoist, Prachanda said referendum on monarchy, republicanism and proportional electoral system could be held. He said people would have several options if the political parties could not reach consensus on the political issues.

Holding a referendum on monarchy and republicanism might be okay but on the proportional electoral system would not be acceptable to the ethnic, Madheshi, dalit and other minority Nepalis, as they might not like the majority of Nepalis voting on referendum would make decision on their rights to be represented in a constituent assembly or to have their voices heard in any questions of the national interest, proportional to their population. So, Chairman Prachanda should be careful of what he has been telling to the reporters.
