Migratory Birds At Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve In Crisis

Issue 02, January 12, 2014

By KTM Metro Reporter

January 8, 2014: Migratory birds from Mongolia, Russia, China and Siberia usually in November fly in to the Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve for five months to stay during winter; then they fly back to their respective homes. Currently, they have been facing problems of survival due to the pesticides used by farmers, and falling prey to the locals, according to the RS news on gorkhapatrraonline.com.’

Farmers using the heavy doses pesticides in crops have poisoned the foods for the birds causing their death. Locals also have been the predators of the birds.

Tourists and ornithologists from Hong Kong, China, Britain, Pakistan, the Netherlands and Europe visit the reserve to study and watch birds. Tourist arrival has been a good source of income for the reserve. Tourist arrival is likely to be affected if the migratory birds are not protected on time.
