Term Of High-Profile taskforce Extended

October 25, 2010: leaders of the 27 political parties represented at the Constituent Assembly (CA) have held a meeting to review the work done by the high-profile taskforce headed by Chairman of UCPN-Maoist Prachanda to sort out the contentious issues of the subject-matter committees and to build a consensus on the issues. The taskforce is supposed to present its work to the CA on October 24 but its Chairman is in China to attend the closing ceremony of the Shanghai Expo of 2010. At the meeting, the leaders have decided to give 11 more days to the high-profile taskforce for completing its work.
The high-profile taskforce set up by the leaders of 27 political parties represented at the Constituent Assembly comprises the top leaders of the seven-major political parties. This taskforce in turn has set up its subsidiary panel comprising Dev Prasad Gurung of UCPN-Maoist, Dr Ram Sharan Mahat and Ramesh Lekhak of Nepali Congress, Bharat Mohan Adhikari of CPN-UML, Rateneshwor Lal Kayashtha of Madheshi People’s Rights Forum, Nepal, Sunil Prajapati of Nepal Workers’ and Peasants’ Party, Prem Bahadur Singh of Samajbadi Prajatantrik Janata Dal and Rukmini Chaudhary of Sanghiya Loktantrik Rastriya Manch to build a consensus on the contentious issues.
The members of the subsidiary panel at the meeting held on Saturday, October 23 could not build a consensus on any contentious subject matters appeared on the reports of the CA Committee on Judicial System and Fundamental Rights and Directive Principles, ‘The Rising Nepal’ of October 24, 2010 writes. The political leaders have not agreed on several issues including appointment of judges and interpretation of the constitution either by the Parliament or by the Supreme Court. "We decided to continue the meeting as the issues demanded more discussions," member of the subsidiary panel and CPN-UML leader Bharat Mohan Adhikary told journalists after the meeting.
