Outage of 51 Hours Starting Wednesday

Issue 01, January 3, 2010

By KTM Metro Reporter in Kathmandu

The government-run company Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) has announced that the outage per week will be 51 hours: eight hour for two days and seven hours for five days. So, Nepalis will need to live in darkness for most of the evening time, as the NEA shuts down the supply of power at the peak load time usually in the evening when everybody needs power to light his/her home.

Prime Minister Madhav Nepal, his energy minister and finance minister are holidaying in Beijing for a week. Madhav Nepal has been enjoying the company of his spouse even in the foreign tours. Only two weeks ago they have been in Copenhagen for more than a week. Before that they have been in Indian and America. Some economists compute that if the government money they have been spending on foreign travels put together it is already enough for building a small hydropower plant.

Foreign Minister Sujata Koirala has spent government money $1,400 per night for her private visit to be with her father Girija Prasad Koirala in Singapore when he went there to check up his health.
