SAARC Summit In Bhutan

Issue 18, May 2, 2010

By KTM Metro Reporter in Kathmandu

April 29, 2010: the periodic summit of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation has started off in Thimpu, Bhutan on April 28, 2010, and will complete on April 29, 2010. The eight-nation association has been holding a periodic summit every two year but the summit has been limited to the rhetoric speeches of the head of states and governments, as the enforcement of the pledges made in the summit has been lukewarm.

SAARC leaders don’t talk about the bilateral issue but they sometimes meet their counterparts on the sideline of the summit. So, indirectly, they discuss their bilateral issues, too while attending the SAARC summit.

This summit will also be not much different from the previous summits. All the head of states and governments will make one speech after another in turn and then have a banquet. Members of their entourage have nice sightseeing in the forbidden country Bhutan. Everything will be back to square one once all of the head of states and governments go back to the respective country.

US delegation and Chinese delegation have been attending the SAARC summit as observers. Chinese delegation has promised the Nepalese Foreign Minster the Chinese assistance to the SAARC. However, other member countries particularly India will accept the Chinese assistance to the SAARC or not.
