Hearing On Corruption Case Against Khum Bahadur Khadka

Issue 32, August 5, 2012

By KTM Metro Reporter

July 30, 2012: a division bench of the Supreme Court of Nepal Justices such as Kalyan Shrestha and Baidyanath Upadhayay resumed the hearing on the corruption case against Senor Leader of NC Khum Bahadur Khadka, according to ‘THT ONLINE”.

The Special Court had acquitted Khum Bahadur Khadka along with recently convicted Govinda Raj Joshi of corruption and deceased Rabindra Nath Sharma of Rastriya Prajatantra Party of Nepal based on the technical lag of the cases in the past.

However upon appeal of the Commission on Investigation into Abuse of Authority (CIAA), the Supreme Court of Nepal had referred the case of Govinda Raj Joshi back to the Special Court to reopen the case. The Special Court convicted Govinda Raj Joshi of amassing huge assets abusing his power during the offices of various ministers he had held in the past. Recently, the Special Court in its ruling gave Mr. Joshi one-and-a-half-year term and imposed the fine of Rs 21.6 millions.

Some analysts say that the fine was a peanut in comparison to the huge fortune Mr. Joshi had made, and the jail term was also very small in comparison to the crimes Mr. Joshi had committed. Such corrupt ministers had stolen the billions of rupees intended to the poverty alleviation of millions of Nepalis depriving the opportunity of coming out of the poverty. However, the only thing that gave satisfaction to all the sincere Nepalis was the black spot on the family dynasty of the corrupt ministers. Mr. Joshi and his seven generations would never be able to get rid of such black spot of corruption on their family history.

The Supreme Court of Nepal had convicted former ministers such as Chiranjeevi Wagle and Jaya Prakash Prasad Gupta of corruption and jailed them. Both of them were the former NC leaders. Thus, NC holds the record number of corrupt ministers in the past.

Some NC cadres are still there to give to the continuity to the corruption and have the slice of the cake the corrupt minister makes. NC cadres held a protest rally against the ruling of the Special Court on convicting NC Leader Govinda Raj Joshi of corruption and sending him to jail and imposing fine on him in Damauli according to ‘The Himalayan Times.’ The police arrested former lawmaker Urmila Thapa, general convention representative Krishna Gautam, regional representative Bishnu Shrestha, Bandipur VDC President Gyanendra Adhikary, district members Gopal Bhandari, and Uday Gauli, among others for obstructing the highway at Damauli in protest against convicting Govinda Raj Joshi of corruption.
