Imposition of Hindi on Nepalis

Issue 31, August 03, 2008

By KTM Metro Reporter in Kathmandu

On July 27, 2008, speaking at the Constituent Assembly (CA), leader of Madheshi People’s Rights Forum (MPRF) Upendra Yadav said, “I love Hindi language as much as you love Nepali; I respect your language.” At the time when all languages spoken by Nepalis are considered as ours, Mr. Yadav has been advocating your and our languages.

Political analysts believe that Upendra Yadav might be the foreign agent working in the interest of foreign power, as he instructed newly elected vice-president to take oath in Hindi under the order of the authority higher than him. Who could be the authority higher than the president of MPRF? Vice-president Jha in turn said that Mr. Upendra Yadav has been working on making Hindi: one of the Nepalese languages.

Despite the constitutional provision for doing official business in Nepali, President Dr. Rambaran Yadav did not attempt to enforce it rather agreed to read the oath in Nepali and let newly elected Vice-president translate it into Hindi. Is it not the conspiracy of imposing Hindi on Nepalis? Is it not the president also violating the Interim Constitution of Nepal of 2007 letting the vice-president take oath in Hindi?
