Issue 01, January 3, 2010

By KTM Metro Reporter in Kathmandu

The government-run newspaper ‘Gorkhapatra’ December 29, 2009 has reported that the Government of Madhav Nepal is going to foot the telephone and water bills used by the former king until the Constituent Assembly declared him a commoner and ordered him to vacate the palace. The amount of pending telephone bills has reached Rs 22.60 million and water Rs 22.70 million.

During the dynastic rule, the Shah dynasty has set the tradition of waiving the payment of utility bills to the family members of seven generations. Thus, they have enjoyed the free supply of utility during the despotic dynastic rule keeping the majority of Nepalis in the absolute poverty. They assumed that the state treachery was their private pocket.
