Baburam Talks To Madheshi Leaders And NC Leader Deuba

Issue 34, August 21, 2011

BY KTM Metro Reporter

August 18, 2011: Vice-chairman of UCPN-Maoist Dr. Baburam Bhattarai and his team has had a meeting with the leaders of United Democratic Madhesi Front (UDMF) seeking their support for a so-called national consensus government under him. UCPN-Maoist has given a green signal to Dr. Baburam Bhattarai for forming a government under him.

This time, Madheshi leaders might play a constructive role in forming a new government after Mr. Khanal quit the office. They have realized that leaders of the major political parties have marginalized them not only ignoring their demands but also failing to enforce the deals they have reached with the government and the leaders of the three major political parties: UCPN-Maoist, NC and CPN-UML in the past. So, this time, they are determined to support only the candidate that could form a national consensus government. However, it remains to be seen whether the Madheshi leaders would stick to their determination not falling into the trap of getting highly lucrative ministerial portfolios.

So, Dr. Baburam Bhattarai has got what heeds to get from the Madheshi leaders: he should be able to set the political agenda that will be acceptable to all political parties for completing the peace process and the constitution writing; then only he would receive the support for forming a consensus government.

Dr. Baburam Bhattarai also has had talks with senior leader of NC Sher Bahadur Deuba concerning the formation of a consensus government. Mr. Deuba is the candidate of the NC for a new prime minister. So, Mr. Deuba is also attempting on forming a consensus government under his leadership.

Both Dr. Bhattarai and Mr. Deuba have time until the midnight of August 21, 2011 to form a consensus government.
