Possibility of New Government

Issue 19, May 10, 2009

By KTM Metro Reporter in Kathmandu

Political analysts say that first of all the CPN-UML and the NC will have a horrendous task to garner a simple majority in the parliament of 601 seats for forming a new government. They have to work hard to convince the small political parties of joining the government, as each political party will have its own interest in and demand for joining a new coalition government.

The simple arithmetic shows that the NC having 113 seats and the CPN-UML 109 together have the strength of 222 in the parliament of 601. So, they are short of 79 votes for having a simple majority in the parliament to form a new government. Madheshi People’s Rights Forum (MPRF) having 53 seats and Terai Madhesh Democratic Party (TMDP) having 21 together cannot meet the shortage of seats. So they need the support of other political parties such as Nepal Sadbhava Party and Rastriya Prajatantra Party. The United Communist Party of Nepal-Maoist with 238 seats in the parliament will certainly play a crucial role in making and breaking a new government.
