On May 27, 2009, in the meeting held at the central secretariat located at the party office Buddhanagar, Kathmandu, the United Communist Party of Nepal-Maoist has decided to deploy its energy in writing a new constitution.

On May 27, 2009, speaking at the function held by the ‘Krishna Sen Academy’ former Prime Minister and Maoist Chairman Prachanda has said that the counter revolution has been started off to offset the ethnic, regional, gender and class consciousness brought by the People’s War; however, the counter revolutionaries will soon come to an end; the Nepalese people have been near to victory. He also said that counter revolutionaries have been attempting on driving the Maoists away from the peace process; however, all Nepalis will unite for peace.

On May 27, 2009, speaking at the function held to mark the ninth anniversary of the National Human Rights Commission-Nepal (NHRC), Prime Minister Madhav Nepal has said that the UN Office of High Commissioner for Human Rights in Nepal has been ineffective, as it has focused on more political issues than the human rights issues; it has requested the government for extension of its term in Nepal for three years without any sound reasons but the government will extend its tenure for three months.

On May 27, 2009, speaking to the BBC-news anchor, newly appointed Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal has said that the firing of the Chief of Army Staff is a mistake. The previous government headed by Maoist Chairman Prachanda has fired the Chief of Army Staff charging him of not abiding by the government’s order. The then government has claimed that it has been necessary to fire the indiscipline top-ranking soldier to set the civilian supremacy over the army.

On May 27, 2009, the floods caused by the heavy rains in the Koshi River have damaged three cofferdams again displacing the people living down stream of the Koshi River. The traffic on the East-West Highway already has been hampered. The irony is that the oath-taking ceremony for a new Prime Minister has coincided with the break-up of the Koshi dam as in the last year.

On May 28, 2009, the state-run newspaper ‘Gorkhapatra’ has a news item stating the discussion on the ‘Resolution Motion’ registered by the United Communist Party of Nepal-Maoist at the parliamentary secretariat demanding the parliament instruct the President to annul his decision on overstepping the decision of the government on firing the Chief of Army Staff, as majority of the political parties represented in the parliament have stood up against discussing this motion in the parliament. However, the Speaker needs to decide whether the parliament will take up this issue or not.

On May 28, 2009, the Radio Nepal in its morning news has stated that Australia, and European countries such as Germany, Italy and Spain have issued warning to their citizens not to travel to Nepal in view of possible violence; if they do, be prepared to travel back at a short notice. The US has already issued such notice to its citizens after the collapse of the Maoist-led government in Nepal. The Nepalese tourism entrepreneurs have already felt its impact on their industry having a less number of tourists from those countries.
