Nepal deports a US national and Blackouts news from Everest
By KTM Metro Reporter in Kathmandu
On Monday, April 28, 2008, the Government of Nepal has deported William Brant Holland a US national that has taken with him a Tibetan flag paying no attention to the government’s notice of not taking any materials offending the Chinese officials to the Everest base camp from May 1 to 10, as on any day of this period the globetrotting Olympic torch is anticipated to pass through the areas on the Tibetan side of the Mount Everest according to the spokesman for the Ministry of Tourism.
Tibetan exiles have been staging a protest rally in Kathmandu almost every day since they had stage a protest rally to mark the anniversary of the aborted uprising of Tibetans against the Chinese rule in Tibet on March 12, 2008. The Chinese rulers have been putting pressure on the government of Nepal to prevent Tibetan protests in Nepal.
The Government of Nepal has been following the one-China policy considering Tibet and Taiwan as the parts of the People’s Republic of China.
Both China and Nepal have been imposing a news blackout not releasing any news about the progress of the Olympic torch arriving at the Mount Everest. On the Nepalese side of the Mount Everest, the Government of Nepal has imposed a communications ban not only prohibiting satellite phones and video cameras but also even recorded non-political materials to this area. This is what the Government of Nepal has been doing for the friend in the north.
