By KTM Metro Reporter in Kathmandu
The Indian authorities have not released water to the farmers of the central tarai areas of Nepal saying the Gandak Irrigation system has been very old and has not been able to provide the Nepalese farmers with water following the agreement between Nepal and India has had according to the 7:00 A.M. morning news of the state-run Radio Nepal aired on July 8, 2009. Most of the Nepalese land may remain fallow this year denying rice crops to the farmers.
In the mid 1950s, Nepal and India have signed an agreement on India building an irrigation system in the Nepalese territory and then sharing in the water. Accordingly Nepalese farmers have been receiving water. However, the Indian authorities have been diverting water to Indian Territory leaving the Nepalese farmers’ land dry.
