May 1, 2013: The World Bank (WB) has agreed to provide the Government of Nepal with the assistance of Rs. 6.69 billion for Climate Change and Food Security Projects, according to the news posted on ‘gorkhapatraonline.com’ today.

Rs. 2.67 billion is to improve the accuracy and timeliness of weather and flood forecasts and warnings to the climate-vulnerable communities for mitigating climate-related hazards, and to develop agricultural management information system services to help farmers in mitigating climate-related production risks.

Rs. 4.02 billion is for the implementation of the Nepal Agriculture and Food Security Program (NAFSP). NAFSP is for the hills.

Rs. 1.29 billion is the loan assistance out of the assistance provided for the climate change mitigation, and the remaining portion is grant. The life of the project is five years.

At an event held at the Ministry of Finance yesterday, Secretary to the Ministry Shanta Raj Subedi on behalf of the Government of Nepal, and WB's Country Manager for Nepal Tahseen Sayed on behalf of the WB signed off the agreement.

On the occasion, Country Manager Sayed has said that the WB has been supporting Nepal for its socio-economic development as far as possible, and committed to give continuity to it. He also said that the targets of the projects would be achieved from the support the WB provides for the next five years.

Secretary Subedi has said that Nepal is one of nine countries getting financial support from the WB for the project related to climate change, and hoped that the Ministry of Environment, Science and Technology would work to reduce the risks of climate change.
