Remembering Pushpa Lal
By KTM Metro Reporter in Kathmandu
On July 22, 2009, Nepalese communists celebrated the 31st death anniversary of the founding father of the Communist Party of Nepal. According to the state-run newspaper “The Rising Nepal” of July 22, 2009, Prime Minister Madhav Nepal is going to unveil the life-sized statue of Pushpa Lal on the premises of the Pushpa Lal Memorial Foundation at Kirtipur-8, Champadevi on the occasion of the 31st Memorial Day of Pushpa Lal.
Pushpa Lal had advocated for the all-party front for fighting against former King Mahendra when he dissolved the parliament and made functioning of political parties illegal. His demand was to reinstate the parliament Mahendra had dissolved. However, the Nepali Congress leaders did not heed his idea of fighting together against the despotic former king.
His comrades also did not like the idea of going together with the NC leaders, and labeled him as a collaborator. However, his idea of the need for fighting together against the autocratic king has come true in 1990, and in 2006. The united front of the communists and congress has proved to be a formidable force that has removed the monarchy and set up Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal. The dream of Pushpa Lal has come true.
