Return Of President

President Bhandari returned home on April 22, 2017 completing the five-day State visit to Indian. Foreign Minister Dr Prakash Sharan Mahat returning two-day earlier stated that the president’s India visit is a great success. How it has become a great success, the foreign minister has no details.

The ceremonial president has no serious state businesses with the equally ceremonial Indian counterpart. So, she has nothing but to attend the State banquet, lay the wreath at the Gandhi memorial, visit the religious shrines, and other places of her interest. Her visit is the return visit to the Indian president’s Nepal visit.

On April 17, 2017, the State minister welcomed the president at the airport provoking the Nepalese media to report on insulting the president but the next day, the Indian president and the Indian prime minister gave the Nepalese president the welcome she deserves. It is the tradition of the Indian welcoming ceremony. There is no insulting of the Nepalese president in India, some experienced diplomats said.

Local Government Elections

The local government election is going to be held on May 14, 2017. Election officers have reached their destinations, and have taken up the preparatory work on holding the election.

One of the most important preparatory work has been the voters’ education. Every voter has to vote for seven candidates out of several candidates. so, each election officer has run the voters’ education with a priority so that the wastage of votes would be minimum.

The longest ballot paper is of Kathmandu and the shortest is of Manang. As the number of candidate grows the length of ballot papers also grows.

More than 13,000 women including the dalit women would be elected. Some of them would be either in the mayor or deputy mayor positions in the municipalities, as the constitution has made the provision for making one of the two positions of mayor or deputy mayor in each municipality need to go to a woman.

The United Democratic Madheshi Front has agreed on participating in the election after a revised amendment to the constitution bill is passed. Currently, the 11-point amendment bill is at the parliament secretariat. A taskforce on revising the amendment bill is set up. Rajendra Shrestha and Laxman Lal Karna represent the UDMF on the taskforce, and Krishna Sitaula and Buddhi Man Tamang represent the parties in power.

Economy

The World Bank has stated the economic growth of Nepal in this fiscal year would be 6.5 percent. This might be due to the end of the power outage.

The news in “gorkhapatra” of April 21, 2017 stated that the industrial production in the Sunsari district has increased by 20 percent after the uninterrupted power supply has been. Previously, the power outage had been eight to 14 hours a day causing tremendous problems to the industry.

Similarly, the service sector must have a higher output too after the end of the power outage.

Reconstruction

National Reconstruction Authority has proposed to provide the landless quake victims with NPR 200,000 for purchasing land for constructing a new house. Previously, they did not have even the relief supplies as they did not have any land ownership certificates.

NRA has released NPR 50,000 as the first installment of NPR 200,000 to the quake victims for building a new house. However, this amount is very small to build any house for a family of five if the amount dhurmus-suntali foundation has spent on building houses for the Mushar colony in Bardibas recently. A two-storey one family house cost more than a million NPR.

NRA has been doing more paper work than providing the quake victims with relief supplies. Some people have already started off asking where the $4 billion the donor community has committed to provide Nepal with for reconstruction at the donor meeting held on June 25, 2015. NRA has been shying away from telling the people the truth about the reconstruction money the donors have committed.
