State Employees Go With Impunity

Issue 48, November 29, 2009

By KTM Metro Reporter in Kathmandu

The Women’s Rehabilitation Center has initiated to launch a legal campaign for giving justice to the policewoman raped by her men colleagues, as the government of Madhav Nepal has done nothing even after two months of the incident according to the news in the state-run newspaper ‘Gorkhapatra’ of November 25, 2009. Chairwoman of Women’s Rehabilitation Center Dr. Renu Rajbhandari has said that as long as the government would not be accountable to the issues of the women, violence against women will not end.

Another incident is the woman state minister hitting male officer and moving with impunity. Following the Public Offense Law, Minister of State for Agriculture and Cooperative Karima Begam is subject to the Rs 10, 000 fine and two-year imprisonment for slapping the Chief District Officer of the Parsa district. In this case, too, Prime Minister Madhav Nepal and his Home Minister Bhim Rawal have been ignoring to take any actions against the State Minister. So State Minister Begam instead of being behind bars has been running her ministry with impunity.

It is no wonder that Prime Minister Madhav Nepal has successfully lowered the position of Nepal on the Corruption Perception Index (CPI) from 122 to 143 indicating the increased corruption.
