Election for Chair of Constitutional Committee

Issue 33, August 16, 2009

By KTM Metro Reporter in Kathmandu

On August 14, 2009, leaders of the three major political parties such as NC, CPN-UML and UCPN-Maoist have meet to discuss the election for the chairperson of the Constitutional Committee, which has remained vacant for three months after Madhav Nepal left the position for being Prime Minster.

On August 17, 2009, the political parties are going to hold an election for the chairperson of the Constitutional committee.

The CPN-UML and the UCPN-Maoist are for electing a chairperson based on the consensus politics, as the Constituent Assembly has no opposition party. However, both the UCPN-Maoist and the NC leaders have been claiming the position of the chairperson. The UCPN-Maoist is claiming it, as it is the major political party whereas the NC leaders have been saying that the CPN-UML has got both the Prime Minister and the Speaker; the UCPN-Moist has got the Deputy Speaker, so the NC needs to get the position of the chairperson of the Constitutional Committee.

The CPN-UML leaders have been saying that they have no claim for the Chairperson so they would be only voters. Some other fringe political party leaders also have claimed the position of the chairperson but the major political parties have been ignoring them.
