Prime Minister’s Resignation

Issue 12, March 18, 2012

By KTM Metro Reporter

March 17, 2012: Nobody gets surprised if the opposition leaders demand the resignation of Prime Minister immediately after the appointment but this time leaders of UCPN-Maoist have come out openly in public demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Dr. Baburam Bhattarai. In fact, the CPN-UML leaders also have played a major role in tearing down the government of Madhav Nepal in the past.

Speaking at the press conference held at the Radisson Hotel in Kathmandu today, Secretary to UCPN-Maoist CP Gajurel has said that Chairman of UCPN-Maoist has promised to sort out the problem of removing this current government within a week, after a month Prachanda has said that he could not do this job; so they are holding this conference to give a deadline of one week to this government for quitting otherwise they would launch a street movement to force the government out of office. Secretary Gajurel also has said that they also have been talking to the NC and CPN-UML leaders to form a new government. However, Vice-chairman Mohan Vaidya Kiran and another Secretary Ram Bahadur Thapa Badal are not seen at the conference; reasons for that are not known.

NC and CPN-UML leaders have been demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Dr. Bhattarai but could not much except for shouting at the public meetings because the coalition of UCPN-Maoist and UDMF has been sticking together and even consolidating their bond. Now, the leaders of the faction of UCPN-Maoist would make the job of opposition leaders of removing Prime Minister Bhattarai easy.

However, the absence of Vice-chairman Mohan Vaidya Kiran and Secretary Ram Bahadur Thapa Badal at the press conference indicates either these guys are not agreeable to the press conference Mr. Gajurel or his colleagues have held or are simply hiding behind them just to have room for the future reconciliation with the prime minister. Anyway this is the politics currently going on in Nepal.

At the same time, through the political advisor, Prime Minister Dr. Baburam Bhattarai has told the fans of his removal from the office that he is not going to quit the office no matter what they would do. His advisor has said that these guys demanding the resignation of the prime minister and labeling the government anti-nationalist are inviting a conflict in the country.

Speaking in Kathmandu, Indian ambassador to Nepal Jayant Prasad has said that without the development of Nepal, India’s development would not be compete; so, development of Nepal and India needs to go hand-in-hand, therefore, bilateral relations between Nepal and India need to be strengthened. This might be the hidden support of India for Prime Minister Dr. Bhattarai, and warning to the leaders seeking his ouster.
