Seven-Party Steering Committee

Issue 03, January 20, 2008

By KTM Metro Reporter in Kathmandu

The leaders of the seven-party alliance have agreed to form a “Seven-Party Steering Committee” to steer the government to the right direction in the 23-agreement signed on December 23, 2007. The leaders have been complaining that the NC President and Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala has been monopolizing the power in the coalition government of the seven-party alliance; so the need for such a steering committee.

A meeting of the Seven-party Steering Committee held on January 16 passed a resolution to ask the government for initiating talks with all dissatisfied groups such as Madheshis, ethnic groups, women and Dalits. The leaders taking part in the meeting came to the conclusion that an election for a constituent assembly would not be meaningful without addressing the concerns of various groups through dialogue.

Recently, Prime Minister Koirala nominated his daughter Sujata Koirala to the Minister without portfolio obviously without consulting anyone of the leaders of the seven-party alliance (SPA). Immediately, after getting the ministerial position without portfolio, Minister Sujata Koirala flew to her hometown Biratnager where she spoke in support of the monarchy and the revival of the Constitution of Nepal of 1990.

The SPA leaders at the meeting of the Seven-Party Steering Committee said that Sujata Koirala’s remarks on the constitution and the monarchy are unconstitutional and asked the NC leaders for the explanation of her remarks.

Several Interim Legislators raised voices against the Sujata Koirala’s remarks on the monarchy and the constitution during the session of the Interim Legislature-parliament. Some of them even demanded the Prime Minister to fire her from the ministerial job.
