Statue Of Tribhuvan Moving To Museum

Issue 02, January 08, 2012

BY KTM Metro Reporter

January 3, 2012: the government of Nepal headed by Dr. Baburam Bhattarai has yesterday made a decision on moving the statue of Tribhuvan standing above the four fundamental martyrs of Nepal at the Sahid-gate Kathmandu to the Narayanhiti National Museum.

Breaking the tradition of paying tribute to the martyrs at the Sahid-gate Kathmandu after taking the oath of the prime minister, Dr. Baburam Bhattarai went to Kirtipur and paid his tribute to the statue of Pushapal Lal: founding father of the Communist Party of Nepal after taking the oath of prime minister, as Bhattarai found the statue of Tribhuvan not acceptable to him at the Sahid-gate Kathmandu.

Mahendra: son of Tribhuvan had set the tradition of moving the statues from the crossroads to Tundukhel. After taking over the power from the elected Nepali Congress government killing democracy in 1960 and then consolidating power in his hands, he moved the statues of former Rana prime ministers standing at different crossroads in Kathmandu to Tundikhel. Mahendra had moved one Buddhist shrine from Mahaboudha in Kathmandu to somewhere in Svoyambhu to widen the road.

Now, it is the turn of the prime minister of Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal to move the statues of former Shah rulers from different crossroads to any museum. The first such statue should be the statue of the most hated Mahendra: killer of democracy, then of course of Tribhuvan and Birendra standing elsewhere in Nepal.
