Amnesty Demands Nepal Army turning Over Major Basnet to Police

Issue 51, December 20, 2009

By KTM Metro Reporter in Kathmandu

On December 14, 2009, the Amnesty International has said that the government must ensure the transfer of Major Niranjan Basnet expelled from a UN peacekeeping mission in Chad after finding the Kavre District Court had charged him with the 2004 murder of the 15-year-old girl, Maina Sunuwar to a civilian court for trial. The Amnesty International also has stated that the Minister of Defense is opposed to arresting and surrendering Major Basnet to a civilian court according to media reports. Some media reports also say that senior Army staffs are waiting for the return of Army Chief Chhatra Man Singh Gurung from a visit to India to make a decision on whether the Army will cooperate with the civilian prosecution of Major Niranjan Basnet. The Army Chief will be back to Nepal on December 19, 2009

The local media have reported that the Nepal Army instead of turning over Major Basnet to the police as suggested by the Prime Minister has been preparing to ask the UN on what charges the UN has fired Major Basnet from the job of UN peacekeeping in Chad.
