Nepal Becomes Landmine Free Nation

June 15, 2011: Prime Minister Jhalanath Khanal has set off the last two minefields in the Phulchoki hills together with Chief of Army Staff General Chhatra Man Singh Gurung yesterday and has declared that Nepal has now become the landmine free nation. The prime minister has said that clearing all landmines is the part of the peace process following the Comprehensive Peace Agreement the government has reached with the Maoists, and is the crucial achievement of the peace process, ‘The Rising Nepal’ of today writes.

Robert Piper of UN High Commission for Human Rights has welcomed the status of Nepal as the landmine free nation. Similarly, the UK government has welcomed the successful clearance of last landmine in Nepal and the country becoming a landmine free. UK Foreign Office Minister Jeremy Browne has said that clearing the last landmine, Nepal has made a remarkable achievement.
