Brigade of Gurkhas Reduces To 2,900 By 2015

April 4, 2011: following the austerity measures for cutting the deficit in the budget, the British conservative government has announced its plan on reducing 7,000 soldiers, of them 700 Gurkhas from the British Army by 2015. Number of Gurkhas serving in the British Army will go down from 3,600 to, 2,900.

Reduction of soldiers from the British Army will be done in phases. In September of this year as many as 165 Gurkhas will leave the service voluntarily. Most of them reaching the retirement age will leave the service.

However, the British Army has increased the number of years Gurkhas can serve from 15 to 22 years. Recruitment of Gurkhas will continue.
